According to Leon Cytryn and Donald Mcknew, in “The Causes of Childhood Depression” in “Growing Up Sad,” 1998, page 80-108, the main factor of childhood depression is family. The authors represented that childhood depression is totally related to their parents depression and influenced by their parents. The environment of family is very important, however, there are still lot of problems exist in some families that cause childhood depression, such as, abuse, anger, violence and divorce, the writers indicated. Leon Cytryn and Donald Mcknew described that when parents become extremely close that is not normal, they never want to go out, because they are so afraid of the world outside, which influence their children a lot and make their children become depress and stressful. When parents set goals too high for their children, which also bring a lot of stress to their children, the authors said. The article also showed than when parents move to another new place from the place that their children get used to, it will also become a factor that causes childhood depression. Leon Cytryn and Donald Mcknew resulted that parents should provide a comfortable and peaceful environment to their children in order to help their children get out of stress and grow up happily.

Hi, Tang Na! I was interested in your topic. On Monday, you were talking about causes of childhood depression. When i heard that one of the major causes is because of parents, i absolutely agreed with the author. Children can get depressed if their parents get divorced, abuse or do violence to children. Parents must offer their children comfortable environment and let them know if they change surroundings.I think there are also possibilities that children may suffer from other conditions such as schools or peers. I hope i can see other causes next time. :)
Hi, Tang Na, it's Shawn again. In this summary, you talked about some factors that would cause children depression. Family environment didn't surprise me, a lot of cases proved this. However, in details, one of them surprised me. Which is that the parents are too close and never want to go out. Before reading, I would think this was not good for children's growing up only, I would never realize it is so serious that would cause children depression. I also agree with the author that all the parents should give their children a comfortable and peaceful environment,they have responsiblities to do this. Thank you.
